Build a Universe is a wooden assembly toy that uses interlocking notches to allow the user to create a three dimensional form that abstractly mimics planets and their obits, forming a interactive play space.
The challenge
To design and manufacture an interactive wood object for one particular child between the ages of 4-8 years old, while implementing technical and theoretical principals of semi-automated wood manufacturing.
Process + Ideation
Design and Sketching Sessions
Hudson loves everything to do with outer space and has an incredible amount of knowledge on the subject (and when I say incredible I don’t just mean for a 5 year old, I mean for anyone) He also loves to build things. He says he already has a lot of toys but doesn’t have any sets or spaces to play with them. So we wanted to combine these two loves and give him a interactive setting to play with his toys.
Hudson’s house did not have a lot of storage so it was important to design something that could be easily put way ( much to the appreciation of his mother)
